Hidden treasure in East London residential area

East London’s newest residential development is to be named ‘Nautilus Apartments’, taking inspiration from a vessel built in 19th century London by Thames Ironworks and Ship Building.

Due for completion in spring 2023, Nautilus Apartments forms part of a wider three-phase build-to-rent development, Fortunes Dock, from the UK’s largest listed provider of private rental homes, Grainger plc.

Inspired by Thames Ironworks and Ship Building Ltd, based out of Canning Town from 1835 -1912, Nautilus Apartments is named after the vessel built by the local shipyard and iron works.

Located at Hallsville Quarter, a new neighbourhood in the heart of Canning Town, the wider development, Fortunes Dock, also celebrates the city’s rich shipping history.

Once a vibrant riverfront home to thriving communities of watermen, fishermen and sailors, Fortunes Dock takes inspiration from The River Thames, which in historic folklore brought great fortune to merchants trading on the docks.

Located a convenient five-minute walk from Canning Town underground station, Nautilus Apartments at Fortunes Dock creates an additional 146 new homes with a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, bolstering the rental offering in East London.

The build-to-rent development features several social spaces and amenities including a resident’s lounge, co-working space including working booths and pods, and a dedicated on-site Resident Services team.

The launch of Nautilus Apartments follows the success of Grainger’s Argo Apartments, also part of Fortunes Dock, which launched in 2018, and is named after the first ship that circumnavigated the globe and was built in Leamouth, directly opposite Argo Apartments.

Leesa Ingham, Head of Marketing at Grainger said: “When deciding on the name of any new Grainger development, great time is spent researching the history of the site and local area.

“We discussed several names for our new buildings within the Fortunes Dock development in Canning Town and Nautilus Apartments and Seraphina Apartments felt like natural fits given the developments proximity to The River Thames.

“The name really allows us to celebrate the merchants who brought great fortune to the docks of London in centuries gone by.

“We can’t wait to find further inspiration from the local area and incorporate this into interior design decisions as we move towards completion in spring 2023.”
