Jungle pub with orangutan landlord – The Deforesters Arms – launches to warn public about palm oil

The Deforesters Arms, a pop-up jungle pub from Meridian, the palm oil free nut butter brand, is now open. Run by Meridian’s *orangutan ambassador, Pongo, the unique experience whisks guests off to a jungle oasis in the heart of London Bridge.

Tickets are just £10 with all proceeds from sales going to International Animal Rescue – a charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing Bornean orangutans.

Patrons will be treated to a drink with Pongo the animatronic orangutan, tasty palm-oil-free canapes and a pub quiz. You can still grab tickets at DesignMyNight.com for Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th October, at 6pm.

Meridian is launching the pop-up pub to warn the public of orangutans’ risk of imminent extinction and raise awareness of the impact palm oil deforestation is having on jungle habitats.

24 million hectares of rainforest (an area the size of the UK) was destroyed in Indonesia between 1990 and 2015, primarily to make way for palm oil plantations. The latest figures show just 100,000 Bornean orangutans remain in the wild and the species is critically endangered.

Despite a third of Brits saying deforestation is one of the most important environmental issues to them, Meridian’s latest **research reveals two thirds (66%) aren’t proactively avoiding palm oil. And a third (33%) of the population said they feel palm oil is simply impossible to avoid because it’s in so many foods.

Managing Director of Meridian Foods, Paul Fraser commented:

“By opening the doors to The Deforesters Arms, we hope to show there are simple steps we can all take to help turn around the fate of the orangutan species. By choosing products that don’t contain palm oil, everyone will help reduce demand and deforestation, protecting orangutans like our ambassador, Pongo, in the process.

“But really, the responsibility shouldn’t lie with consumers to reverse climate change. It’s time for businesses to stop using palm oil unnecessarily. So many products contain palm oil which simply don’t need it. In fact, they taste better without it.”
