Hundreds of bleary-eyed commuters expecting nothing more than another grim journey into work found themselves singing, dancing and filming on their phones after a surprise gospel choir erupted into song across Central London.
Instead of the usual rush-hour silence, headphones and coffee cups, office workers were met by the acclaimed London International Gospel Choir, who popped up in busy commuter hotspots, performing uplifting classics including Walking on Sunshine, Higher Love, Happy and Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.
Within moments, crowds had gathered around the singers, with commuters abandoning their morning march to work to clap along, dance, cheer and capture the unexpected performances on their phones.
The surprise procession travelled down Tottenham Court Road, Cambridge Circus, Carnaby Street, Soho and Leicester Square, leaving a trail of smiling commuters wherever it appeared.
Even Britain’s best-known choirmaster Gareth Malone stopped in his tracks after stumbling across one of the performances outside Global Radio as he arrived to present his Magic FM show. The TV presenter smiled as he watched the choir before continuing on his way to work, giving the surprise performance an unexpected seal of approval from one of the country’s biggest champions of community singing.
One commuter laughed: “I was walking to work thinking about everything I had to do that day when I suddenly heard people singing. Then suddenly everyone around me was smiling, clapping and joining in. It was mental, but it completely cracked the morning mood.”
Another added: “It felt like the whole street stopped. Complete strangers were singing together. You just don’t expect something like that on your way to work.”
A third commuter said: “Walking on Sunshine was the perfect song. Everyone instantly knew the words and within seconds people were joining in.”
The joyful morning surprise was inspired by the simple ways Brits can shake off the morning blues, with music proven to kick-start energy levels and boost dopamine during a grim daily commute.
