A community fundraising campaign has been launched in support of Paralympic gold medallist David Smith MBE, who is currently receiving palliative care after being diagnosed with advanced terminal cancer.
Broadcaster, former rugby ace, and friend of David, Ed Jackson, has helped establish the ‘Miles for Dave’ initiative, encouraging people to get moving and clock up miles over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend (2nd–4th May). Participants can take part in any way that suits them—whether walking, running, cycling, rowing, or covering distance however they choose—making the challenge as inclusive and accessible as possible.
While the challenge can be completed anytime and anywhere, an in-person event will take place on Sunday 3rd May at Battersea Park in London. Hosted by Ed Jackson, the event will run from 9am to 3pm, with participants invited to run, wheel or cycle—choosing their own distance and pace.
More than anything, the initiative aims to show Dave just how much he means to so many people—by doing what he loves most: getting outside and staying active, even while he is unable to do so himself.
A fundraising page has also been set up to help raise vital funds for Dave’s treatment, care, specialist equipment, and to support him and his family during this time.
Broadcaster and Former Rugby Ace Ed Jackson said:
“Dave has given so much to so many people over the years, supporting and inspiring those around him, and now it’s our turn to support him.
As he undergoes palliative care, he’s still fighting with incredible strength. Through ‘Miles for Dave’, we’re raising funds to support his treatment, care and his family during this time.
Whether you take part or donate, every bit of support matters. Dave has always been there for others. Now we’re coming together for him.”
Supporters do not need to take part in the physical challenge to get involved, donations alone will make a meaningful difference.
This campaign is not about performance or competition; it’s about showing up for Dave in whatever way possible.
Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #MilesForDave, helping to build a strong sense of community and collective support.
