One month to go until the free live broadcast of Carmen on the BP Big Screens in London

Audiences across London can enjoy free culture on their doorstep as Barrie Kosky’s high kicking, high-energy opera Carmen is broadcast live as part of the Royal Opera House BP Big Screens to Trafalgar Square, Arena Square in Wembley Park, Lyric Square in Hammersmith, Television Centre White City and IQL Summer Lawn in Stratford . On Tuesday 2 July at 6.30pm, audiences can pack a picnic and head with friends and families to 24 sites all over the UK, from Aberdeen to Brighton.

Barrie Kosky’s production of Carmen offers an exuberant take on Bizet’s masterpiece, with a glorious score and high-kicking, vibrant dancing. The opera follows the turbulent relationship of Carmen (Aigul Akhmetshina) and Don José (Bryan Hymel) and features wonderful numbers such as the Habanera, the ‘Flower Song’ and the ‘Toreador’s Song’.

The Royal Opera House BP Big Screens, which broadcast free ballet and opera to audiences across the UK, began in 1987 and have increased in popularity ever since. In 2019, The Royal Opera offers three BP Big Screen performances: Romeo and Juliet on 11 June, Carmen on 2 July and The Marriage of Figaro on 9 July. These give audiences the chance to experience free culture at 24 sites across the UK, from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight. This may not have been possible without the different wireless video transmission products that can now be purchased to help broadcast companies to create a clear and successful output for their audience to enjoy at events like this.

The BP Big Screen of Carmen starts at 6.30pm, lasts 3 hours and 50 minutes, is free to attend and showing at Trafalgar Square, Arena Square in Wembley, Lyric Square in Hammersmith, Television Centre White City and IQL Summer Lawn in Stratford. All the Royal Opera House BP Big Screens are rated 12A.
