Over 50% of the UK public wouldn’t have a gender reveal, survey reveals

Designer childrenswear boutique Kathryns recently surveyed the UK public to find out more about their thoughts on gender reveals, which have been a huge trend in recent years.

This survey revealed that 65.5% of the UK public wouldn’t have a gender reveal, with 46.5% of respondents stating that they think gender reveals are silly, and 19% saying they would prefer to find out their baby’s sex privately. The survey also revealed…

13% of respondents would have a gender reveal
One in five aren’t sure if they would or not
Males are more likely to have a gender reveal – 7.5% of males said they would have one whilst just 5.4% of females said they would.
Boomers are the most ‘anti-gender reveal’ age group and millennials love them the most.
Simon Large, eCommerce Manager at Kathryns, commented: “Gender reveal parties were huge not too long ago, it’s remarkable to see just how unpopular they’ve become in so little time! It’s really interesting to see that the millennials are more likely to have gender reveals, whilst boomers and gen-z’s have similar feelings towards them.”

A gender reveal party is when soon-to-be-parents gather family and friends to find out the baby’s sex, which is often revealed in ‘fun’ ways such as cutting a cake or popping a balloon to reveal a colour, this is usually pink for a girl and blue for a boy.

There has been a plethora of gender reveal fails over the years. In September 2021, a US couple revealed their baby’s sex by setting off a smoke-generating device, revealing blue smoke – they did this in El Dorado on a hot, dry, windy day which started a huge wildfire, which devastatingly saw a firefighter lose their life. The couple was charged with thirty crimes, including involuntary manslaughter.

Simon added: “Gender reveals are a completely personal choice – some people love them and find they bring their joy to their family while others would rather find out privately and think gender reveals are silly – both arguments are valid.”
