Rees-Mogg: ‘Curious’ that Stella Creasy is enthusiastic about gender-segregation in Walthamstow but not at the Garrick

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has criticised Stella Creasy for supporting female segregation on religious grounds while objecting to it at The Garrick Club.

Speaking on GB News he said: “Well, this is our Humbug of the Year award. Is Labour MP and self-described feminist Dr Stella Creasy the biggest hypocrite in Parliament? And there’s a lot of competition for that.

“She was one of the loudest critics of The Garrick Club for not admitting women, describing its men-only membership as discriminatory.

“How curious then that she was rather more enthusiastic about this gender-segregated Muslim parade in her Walthamstow constituency at the weekend.

“When people rather reasonably asked where the women were, Dr Creasy produced this: ‘Okay women of Walthamstow, so we say Milad Al Nabi and welcome to Walthamstow!’

“Asked if this was confirmation that the women were segregated from the rest of the march, Creasy confirmed that indeed they were.

“Apparently, what was an affront to equality at the Garrick becomes a celebration of diversity in Walthamstow.

“Look, either you believe in freedom of association, which I do, and if the Muslims wish to have segregated marches, that’s a matter for them. If the Garrick Club wishes to be men only or be mixed – that’s a matter for the Garrick Club, and that people should be left to get on with things.

“Where Dr Creasy, a doctorate in social psychology I think, falls down is that she wants to support something for political purposes because she’s got a lot of Muslim voters and she knows they’d be upset if she disagreed with them.

“Whereas she wanted to poke her nose into the Garrick Club, which is frankly nothing to do with her; a private club.

“Her position seems to be that it shouldn’t be allowed except when it’s vote grubbing.”
