Rishi Sunak is not a Conservative to me – Dame Andrea Jenkyns MP

Dame Andrea Jenkyns has called on other Conservative MPs to hand in letters of no confidence after she became the first Tory parliamentarian to publicly call for Rishi Sunak to be replaced.

Speaking on GB News, the MP Morley and Outwood said tonight (MONDAY):

“I’ve run out of patience to be honest with you. I saw some green shoots when we were rolling back on net zero which we needed to do.

“The way he treated Boris [Johnson], the un-conservative policies we’ve got coming through.

“He could have moved Suella to a different position, that’s always in the Prime Minister’s gift. But he has purged my wing of the party out of Cabinet.

“Suella was speaking for the people. I was at four Remembrance services on Sunday and I lost count of the number of people who came up to me and said ‘she’s speaking for me with what’s she’s saying about the two-tier policing system.

“I’m not going to agree on necessarily every one of those things and I would have chosen my words differently if I’m honest but she got the real sense of the frustration of the public.

“What we saw on the streets was just disgusting and if this is modern day Britain, it needs reforming and she was right. She was the only person to actually stand up and speak out who was in the Cabinet.

“We’ve got fantastic people like Priti [Patel] and Jacob [Rees-Mogg] who are no longer in the cabinet but spoke out but she was the only one who was actually in cabinet, so I took my hat off to her.

“I do like David Cameron, by the way, and he and [George] Osborne were brilliant with me when I unseated Ed Balls, and they came up and gave me lots of support. I was disappointed when he resigned and he will do a fantastic job as a Foreign Secretary.

“But to me, it’s what it looks like. In a red wall seat like mine, when you bring somebody on board who actually resigned because he didn’t agree with the Brexit referendum results, it’s actually turning people off in seats like mine.

“It makes people think, are the people within the party itself not good enough to go into Cabinet? This decision: who the heck is advising him?

“I really get on very well with Richard the party chairman but I don’t think it’s a good look when the new party chairman is doing a chicken run.

“He won’t have a seat at the next election so he’s trying to get a safer seat. That’s not a good look for a party chairman and whoever’s advising the Prime Minister, for God’s sake they need sacking.

“To me, it’s bigger than just the party, we’re fighting for our country now. And we are fighting for not only conservatism, but we’re trying to stop the likes of Starmer getting into number 10 and cannot do that with Rishi Sunak.

“We’ve been a year now of Rishi Sunak in post and we’re haemorrhaging votes.

“I’ve had people resign memberships from my constituency and I’ve seen it up and down the country and he’s not conservative to me.

“I don’t agree that we are just a small section of the party. If you look at the party membership, we’re more in tune with this so-called wing of the party and the general populace.”

Asked who she would like to replace the Prime Minister, Dame Andrea said:

“It depends who puts their name forward and one person I don’t want is Kemi [Badenoch]: Among MPs. She’s known as the Great Pretender.

“Let’s not forget how she voted for every one of Theresa May’s deals. I’ve had so many people tell me she’s called that in Parliament, because she makes out she’s this woke warrior. She may be on that issue but she will move to whatever position to get into power just like Mr. Sunak did.

“We don’t want an heir to Sunak, we want a true conviction politician. So let’s see who puts their name forward but I will be backing the person who has got true conviction.”
