Residents at a Hendon care home are celebrating creativity, independence and wellbeing as part of a growing focus on helping older people stay active, inspired and socially connected.
Signature at Hendon Hall, located within the Grade II‑listed 18th‑century Hendon Manor in Barnet, supports residents to continue lifelong interests and explore new creative pursuits within a welcoming community.
The home offers a wide range of activities and amenities, including a dedicated art studio, cinema and landscaped gardens. Alongside regular activities and one‑to‑one sessions, residents also take part in trips to local art and pottery studios, giving them opportunities to try something new and meet others with shared interests.
One resident, Gerald, a former mechanical and aeronautical engineer, has pursued a love of art since his teenage years. Since moving to Hendon Hall, he has continued exploring portrait painting, sculpture, pottery and life drawing. He regularly uses the home’s art studio and has become known for drawing portraits of fellow residents, staff members and visiting family.
Another resident, Zena, has balanced her passion for art alongside a career as a medical doctor and health education professional. Largely self‑taught, she developed her artistic skills through evening classes and personal exploration. Today, her artwork is displayed throughout the home, including in a sculpture garden, where it is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. She has also encouraged others to explore their own creativity.
Residents are also supported to discover new talents together through group visits to local studios, where pottery and ceramics classes often provide first‑time experiences. These sessions help build confidence, spark creativity and strengthen friendships within the community.
For Mary, another resident, enjoyment is found outdoors. Passionate about gardening and golf, she plays an active role in maintaining the gardens, planting flowers and spending time with others in the fresh air.
Speaking about the gardens, Mary said:
“We’re so lucky to have such a lovely garden here. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, and although I’m not an expert gardener, I really enjoy it. It’s a lovely place for everyone to come together.”
Orla, General Manager at Signature at Hendon Hall, said:
“It’s wonderful to see residents continuing to enjoy the activities and interests that are important to them. We focus on really getting to know each person so we can offer support that’s tailored to their individual interests and preferences.”
Staff at the home say creativity and personal fulfilment play an important role in residents’ wellbeing, helping them stay connected, confident and engaged in later life.
