Sir Keir Starmer’s Brexit awakening at Labour conference

‘Please Do Not Disturb’ and ‘Please Make Up My Room’ were not the only hangers on Sir Keir Starmer’s door in the morning.

The Labour leader, his top team and Labour conference attendees awoke to a new message after some late-night antics from the cross-party organisation, European Movement UK.

A replica hotel door hanger with, “Please don’t close the door on Europe”, was left hanging on the door of every hotel room in the Pullman and Jury’s Inn hotels in Liverpool.

Founded by Sir Winston Churchill in the aftermath of WWII, the European Movement is rebuilding relationships with Europe and moving public opinion to a more pro-European position.

With a series of door hangers mimicking hotel ‘Please Do Not Disturb’ signs, the organisation is asking Labour to end the ’conspiracy of silence’ around Brexit.

The reverse features the organisation’s slogan: “We’re in the Battle for the Soul of our Country. Help us win it.”

Anna Bird, CEO of the European Movement, said:

“From health to housing, research to security and trade to climate change, this hard Brexit and its unnecessary red tape are pushing our already overstretched public services to breaking point and dragging our country down.

“As Labour delegates meet in Liverpool this week, this is just a fun little reminder from us to keep the European debate alive within the Labour Party.

“This week, we have met lots of fantastic people who are doing great work but it’s time for Labour catch up with the British public and accept that a closer relationship with the European Union is the only way to solve the myriad of crises that our country faces.

“A conspiracy of silence around Brexit helps no one and we will keep pushing all politicians and all parties to face the reality of the calamity of Brexit.

“And as Sir Keir Starmer, his team and Labour delegates wake up today and open their doors, we hope they will be reminded of the importance of keeping the door open to Europe.

“The European Movement the only organisation with the courage to expose the calamity of Brexit and win the Battle for the Soul of our Country.”
