Hundreds of new and returning students packed into the University of West London (UWL) Students’ Union Freshers’ Welcome Fair on Tuesday 29 September to discover the wide range of clubs, societies and support services available across the University.
Held in Weston Hall at UWL’s Ealing campus, the event brought together more than 40 student-led sports teams, clubs, and societies, alongside university support teams and external organisations, giving students the chance to meet like-minded people and collect a few freebies along the way.
Student representatives were on hand to explain how joining a society can help students build friendships, develop skills and make the most of university.
Saverin, first-team captain for the West London Spartans men’s football club said:
“We’ve got training every Monday from 7.30 – 9.30pm. All our games on Wednesdays are against other universities, both home and away. If you love football come and make new friends. We’re very inclusive.”
Many societies highlighted the importance of creating welcoming communities where students can connect and support one another.
Kelly, representing the Psychology Society, said:
“We are planning lots of creative activities that will help people connect and celebrate our differences. We will also be inviting guest speakers throughout the year. We want to raise awareness of mental health and help people feel like they belong.”
Abigail from the Open Book Society commented:
“We welcome readers from all walks of life. We’ll choose a book a month and share discussions, or members can give presentations about books that have changed their lives. It’s a safe space where people can come together and share their thoughts.”
Dylan, Chair of the Live Sound Society, explained:
“We organise the sound production side of events across the University. We mainly support sessions at Freddie’s on the third Tuesday of each month. We also offer training opportunities, industry talks and organise anything related to live sound.”
Nadim, Vice Chair of the New Experience Society, said:
“We try to give people new experiences and help them build new friendships. We’re going to be having a lot of fun, so come and join us.”
Alongside clubs and societies, students were able to meet representatives from a range of UWL support services, including volunteering, wellbeing, careers, study support and student money and immigration advice.
