70th Anniversary of Queen’s coronation celebrated with exclusive 22 carat gold coins collection

A new collection of coins commemorating the anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II has been released for the event’s 70th anniversary.

Released a little over a month since the world watched the late Queen’s son, King Charles III, being crowned in Westminster Abbey, the collection brings these two great monarchs together in a brand new design.

The 2023 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Anniversary Gold Sovereign Range, launched by coin specialists Hattons of London, celebrates the Queen’s passion for horses with an elegant equestrian portrait.

This portrait of the young Queen riding side saddle on her horse, wearing uniform for the Trooping the Colour ceremony, is reminiscent of the portrait that appeared on the very first commemorative silver Coronation Crowns released in honour of her 1953 Coronation.

With Her Majesty’s Coronation taking place as Britain was emerging from post-war austerity, no gold coins were produced – making these some of the first gold sovereigns to be produced in celebration of an event that was watched the world over.

The collection is also notable as rarely are monarchs depicted on horseback. Indeed, before the Coronation Crown in 1953, this style of portrait hadn’t been seen since the reign of King Charles I. In honour of Queen Elizabeth’s lifelong dedication to horses, equestrian portraits have featured on a few select occasions including the Silver Jubilee Crown in 1977, and two further commemorative crowns released in honour of her Golden and Platinum Jubilees in 2012 and 2022 respectively.

Minted in solid 22 carat gold, the proof quality coin collection is particularly poignant as the design brings together a stately equestrian portrait of the late Queen on the reverse and a portrait of her son King Charles III, designed by celebrated designer Jody Clark, on the obverse.

The coins are available in a range of denominations, a number of which are the first gold sovereigns of their kind to feature an equestrian portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This includes the One-Eighth Sovereign, only 4,999 of which have been minted, the Full Sovereign, only 1,551 have been minted and the extremely limited Double Sovereign, only 149 of which have been minted.

Simon Mellinger, Managing Director at Hattons of London said: “Several weeks ago the world watched as King Charles III’s Coronation married 1,000 years of royal tradition with the spirit of modern Britain. But thoughts also turned to the late Queen Elizabeth II, our beloved Monarch who had taken the very same steps through Westminster Abbey 70 years ago.

“The 2023 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Anniversary Gold Sovereign Range celebrates this incredible global event seven decades later with an equestrian portrait that not only takes inspiration from the very first commemorative coins produced in Her Majesty’s reign, but also pays tribute to her lifelong passion for horses.

“Taking inspiration from the silver Coronation Crown, as we celebrate the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation for the first time in her absence, the collection brings Her Majesty’s extraordinary reign full circle.

“Following swiftly after a number of sell-out ranges created to celebrate King Charles III, we expect this range to follow suit and urge people to act quickly to avoid disappointment.”

Prices start at £69 for the One-Eighth Sovereign. The full range is available now on www.hattonsoflondon.co.uk
