London is the most dangerous place for drivers in Britain
Westminster, London is Britain’s most dangerous place for drivers, new research has found.
The study, commissioned by car insurance experts CarInsurance.ae, analysed Department of Transport data from 2013 to 2020 in areas* across Great Britain on the rate of reported road accidents per 1,000 people.
There are an average of 1,499 accidents every year in Westminster, for a population of 269,848. These figures give Westminster a score of 5.55 accidents per 1,000 people, which is almost three times that of the average score across Great Britain, making it the most dangerous place for drivers.
The area of Kensington and Chelsea is the second most dangerous area, with 4.24 accidents per 1,000 people. The royal borough has 156,864 residents and 666 road accidents per year on average.
Lambeth comes in third, with 1,224 accidents per year and a population of 321,813.
In fourth place is Hammersmith with a score of 3.52, calculated from 647 annual accidents for 183,544 residents, followed by Haringey with a score of 3.21, and Tower Hamlets in sixth place with 3.17 accidents per 1,000 people annually.
All of the top ten most dangerous areas are in London. The region has an overall score of 2.76, meaning London has the most dangerous roads in Britain. Scotland is the safest place overall in Great Britain, with 1.32 road accidents per 1,000 of the population, compared with 1.51 in Wales and 2.05 in England.
