On Saturday, 12th July 2025, pet lovers across the UK are invited to join the celebration of National Pet Shop Day – a special day dedicated to supporting independent pet shops and recognising their vital role in local communities. Launched by Johnson’s Veterinary Products in 2024, this annual event shines a spotlight on the dedicated local businesses that go above and beyond to keep our pets happy and healthy.
This year, National Pet Shop Day is back, bigger and better, with the support of the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) and the British Independent Retail Association (Bira). Together, they are calling on pet owners to visit their local pet shops to mark the occasion and show their appreciation and help safeguard the future of these community hubs.
“Independent pet shops are more than just a place to buy pet food or toys – they are the local health and wellbeing hubs of the pet world, that offer a personal touch that is impossible to replicate. Their knowledgeable teams provide one-on-one support, helping you make the best choices for your pet’s health and happiness,” says Paul Gwynn, Managing Director of Johnson’s Veterinary Products.
“These shops are run by people who genuinely care about pets and their owners. They offer trusted advice, practical solutions, and a friendly face who understands your pet’s unique needs. National Pet Shop Day is about recognising their contribution and encouraging pet owners to continue supporting these invaluable local businesses.
“From offering tailored advice on pet health issues, like fleas, ticks, and other minor conditions, to providing the latest products to keep your furry friends happy, local pet shops are an essential part of every pet owner’s journey. Many of these businesses have built a wealth of knowledge over decades and are ready to share that expertise with you.
“However, in today’s challenging economic climate, independent pet shops face increasing pressure. “Use it or lose it” is more than just a slogan – it’s a reality. Without community support, these beloved local businesses risk disappearing from our high streets altogether.
