The Power of Memories

The Mayor of Londons latest initiative Culture Seeds, is part of his strategy for Culture and aims to put culture at the heart of local communities, where it belongs. Culture Seeds has backed local Filmmaker Michelle Brooks, Imperial College, and Hammersmith and Fulham Council to create an authentic 1960s ‘Reminiscence Room’ in Shepherd’s Bush. This touring exhibition begins on the 12th of June 2019,  at the Petit Miracles, West 12 Shopping Centre, The Green, Shepherds Bush, London W12 8PP. The ‘Reminiscence Room’ continues onto  Shepherds Bush Market before moving to other spaces in the Borough.

Revisiting times gone by is beneficial for people with memory loss, or dementia, because it helps to trigger memories that can bring comfort, or even spark conversations between the generations. Creating a physical space where those memories can be explored safely is the concept behind the Reminiscence Room project. The initiative launches on the 12th of June 2019 by cultural charity Nubian GLU, headed by Michelle Brooks of ShowPatrol.TV in association with the Imperial College in White City.

Curator and creator Michelle Brooks says: “The purpose of the room is to help trigger memories for Windrush era dementia sufferers. It is a space to relax for the community and to ‘Step Back in Time’.”

Honouring The Windrush Generation

The project coincides with the new Windrush Day celebrations. This is to mark the economic, social and cultural contribution of Caribbean-born migrants to the UK during the “Windrush era” of the 1950s-70s.

The room is decorated as a 1960s sitting room. Therefore the look is completed by using that decade’s popular colours, designs and domestic artefacts such as ring-dial telephones, vinyl record players, and Gplan Furniture.

Events in the space will include storytelling sessions, movie screenings, listening parties, photo exhibitions, show-and-tell discussions, and anything else that carers, volunteers or family members might suggest.

If this project is successful in Shepherd’s Bush, it may be rolled out to other areas in London.
