Lifelong Friends Reunite at Pittsmead Grange After Nearly 70 Years

Pittsmead Grange Care Home was the setting for a remarkable heartwarming reunion this week, as two lifelong friends—Sally, and Jill, both aged 86—reconnected after nearly seven decades apart.

The pair first met in 1957 while studying Geography and European History at the University of Reading. They lived together in a spirited all-female student house affectionately nicknamed The Virgins’ Retreat, where laughter was constant and curfews were creatively avoided—often via the laundry window after missing their 10:30 p.m. deadline!

Their university years were filled with dancing, socialising, and the kind of mischief that forges lasting bonds. Jill last saw Sally at her wedding to Michael in 1962. Years later, Jill moved to France with her husband Peter, where they raised their family and built a life far from their student days.

Determined to reconnect, Jill recently searched for Sally’s name online and was surprised to find it mentioned in the minutes of a local allotment committee meeting. Further investigation led her to Sally and her husband Mike, who now happily reside at Pittsmead Grange Care Home in Hayes. From there, Jill reached out—and the reunion was arranged.

Travelling from France with her granddaughter Amelia, Jill visited Pittsmead Grange where the two friends embraced and spent the afternoon reminiscing about their shared past. Born just days apart, both women were delighted to rediscover their connection and reflect on the decades that followed.

“This reunion has touched everyone here,” said a spokesperson for Pittsmead Grange. “It’s a beautiful reminder of how enduring friendship can be, and how life’s most meaningful relationships can be rekindled, even after many years.”
The reunion has inspired staff and residents alike, proving that some friendships truly stand the test of time.
