Residents and team members across Nellsar Care Homes have completed the final leg of their 2026 spring virtual cruise – promoting meaningful well-being through enriching themed activities, with this year’s final stop taking residents ‘down under’.
Following earlier stops in France and Jamaica, the final destination saw Nellsar’s Homes across Kent, Surrey and Essex embrace the sights and flavours of Australia – from barbecues and Bush Tucker Trials to Aussie quizzes, themed decorations and armchair tours of famous landmarks. There were also opportunities for residents to reflect on Australia’s links with British history, including stories of the Ten Pound Poms’ migration scheme.
Designed to support resident well-being through engaging and meaningful experiences, Nellsar’s annual virtual cruises bring destinations to life within the comfort of each Home. The activities offer residents opportunities to explore different cultures, share memories, enjoy sensory experiences and connect with one another.
At Abbotsleigh Care Home in Staplehurst, residents enjoyed an Australian-themed armchair travel adventure, complete with live entertainment from Kevin Walsh and a delicious barbecue feast prepared by the Home’s talented Chefs – including classic “shrimp on the barbie”.
Meanwhile, at Lulworth House Residential Care Home in Maidstone, residents prepared for their voyage by painting Aussie-style hats and decorating them with string and corks. On the day itself, the Home enjoyed a BBQ-style lunch, an Australian sweet treat trolley featuring Tim Tams, Cherry Ripes and Tropical Pineapple bars, followed by a themed quiz to test everyone’s knowledge.
Meyer House Care Home in Erith brought plenty of excitement to its virtual cruise with residents and team members taking part in friendly crocodile wrestling, snake handling and Bush Tucker Trials. Silverpoint Court Residential Care Home in Canvey Island also embraced adventure with an ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’ inspired tasting Bush Tucker Trial. Their decorated trolley featured an array of themed treats, including sweet ‘bugs’, ‘worms’, ‘fish eyes’ and ‘brains’, alongside a ‘cockroach shake’ made with banana and grated chocolate.
At St Winifreds Care Home in Deal, residents enjoyed an Australian zoo tour which travelled around the home, bringing everyone together for quizzes, fun facts and interactive games. A special albino crocodile, affectionately named Charlie by residents, became the star of the day, while Joey the kangaroo added more fun with a hoop-tossing game. Residents who had previously visited Australia also shared their memories, encouraging reminiscence and conversation.
Reflecting on the day, resident Betty said: “I really enjoyed learning all the interesting facts about Australia and the games were great fun. It always makes us laugh when the team members dress up and get into the spirit of the day, it made the whole experience even more enjoyable.”
Resident Marion, who impressed everyone by correctly answering all of the quiz questions, added: “I’ve been to Australia before so it was lovely to talk about my memories and share them with everyone. I remember visiting Sydney Harbour Bridge, so the quiz and activities brought back some wonderful memories for me.”
Viv Stead, Head of Recreation and Well-Being at Nellsar, said: “What a wonderful way to conclude our 2026 spring virtual cruise. Australia gave us so many opportunities to be creative and adventurous. Our cruises are about so much more than travelling from one destination to another. They bring people together, spark memories, encourage conversation and support emotional well-being in a way that feels fun and meaningful. It has been fantastic to see our residents and team members fully embrace each stop on the journey, and Australia was a truly memorable finale.”
Having journeyed through France, Jamaica and Australia, residents across Nellsar’s Homes have now returned from their 2026 virtual cruise with new memories, shared experiences and plenty of photographs to look back on.
