The Wabi Sabi Way: Skincare that Celebrates Imperfection

The Japanese concept of wabi sabi, celebrates imperfection, simplicity, and the natural rhythm of life. The concept combines two related ideas: wabi (rustic simplicity and the beauty of flaws) and sabi (the beauty of age and wear that comes with time).

You see wabi sabi in things like the art of kintsugi, where broken pottery is mended with gold lacquer to highlight its imperfections, wrinkled linen napkins, or well-loved and worn leather bags.

For Jo Wallace, the concept seemed like a great approach to skincare.

Skincare shouldn’t be about chasing perfection, or looking like someone you’re not. Skincare should be a wellness ritual, appreciating our skin as a sign that we are living, seeing, and of growth and growing older as a gift.

Jo’s wellness brand, Wabi Sabi Botanicals, crafts small-batch botanical skincare and candles which promote slow living, being kind to others and ourselves, and embracing impermanence and imperfection in everyday life.

On the meaning of her brand, founder of Wabi Sabi, Jo Wallace, says, “I’d really love people to stop and take a minute to think, or enjoy something we’ve written, to slow down and take some time for themselves. Hell, to look up and smile!”

This November, Wabi Sabi Botanicals is releasing their collection of all-natural soaps, nourishing facial oils, botanical waters, and soul-soothing candles, crafted to nurture you, inside and out.
