It’s not everyday you see three self professed ‘bedroom’ gamers centre stage, gaming in a fine art exhibition in London accompanied by live musicians. Yet that’s exactly what will be taking place on Saturday 31st January from 4-7 PM at SPACE Ilford – an up and coming arts gallery with a focus on community and co-creation in East London.
Imagine taking a gaming session out of a dim-lit bedroom and into the middle of an art exhibition – with an added live soundtrack produced by an instrument made out of PC liquid cooling tubes. For his solo exhibition aptly titled ‘Hiddenware’, Spanish artist, Robert Cervera explores and uncovers the hidden elements behind the tech and gaming worlds through a series of installations and performances that he has been working on with local gamers and musicians.
The audiovisual performance combine professional musicians reactions to what’s happening on the gamers screens. There will be a large screen unveiling the gamer’s journey’s with both the gamers and the musicians taking centre stage during the unusual live performance.
“I think of sound as another material within my work. This time I’m coming back to music with the mind of a sculptor. I see it as another element that I can bring into my installations, together with digital content, sculpture and space itself.
I’m particularly enjoying composing music made with non-conventional instruments, which are actually sculptures made out of tubes. In Hiddenware (my exhibition at SPACE Ilford) I’m trying a new idea with these tube instruments: using them to create live soundtracks to gaming sessions, just in the same way that in early cinema there were musicians playing a live soundtrack on the piano to accompany silent films.” – Robert Cervera, the artist
The next performance will happen on Saturday January 31st, between 4 and 7pm, at SPACE Gallery, Ilford. Join for the whole session or drop in at any point. Or follow it live on Twitch – look for ‘HIDDENWARElive’. With musicians Anna Carter, Barnaby Slade, Cat Eden, Hanna Mbuya, Nicholas Hann, and Robert Cervera.
The performance and exhibition are free with refreshments served from 4 PM ahead of the performance on Saturday January 31st which will begin promptly at 4.30 PM. The Hiddenware exhibition continues until April 2026.
