Residents and team members at Magnolia Court Care Home were delighted to celebrate a very special milestone last week as Maurice and Shirley marked their 66th wedding anniversary.
Maurice and Shirley’s story began in the summer of 1952 when they met, aged just 16, at a Jewish Youth camp in Swanage. It was love at first sight. Although Shirley lived in Dublin, distance never stood in the way of their romance. Maurice would cycle more than 20 miles to see her whenever she was visiting her sister in Liverpool, and when Shirley returned to school in Dublin, he would catch the ferry to visit her there too. In the years after the war, Shirley’s mother was always grateful for the thoughtful items Maurice brought with him, including simple treats and household essentials that were difficult to get in Dublin.
Shirley came from a family of eight children, with her five older siblings emigrating to Israel in 1948 and 1949. She attended Trinity College Dublin, where she graduated in social care before going on to work as a welfare officer for the Jewish Blind Association. During this time, Maurice was posted to Akrotiri in Cyprus at the headquarters of British Middle East Land Forces.
The couple married on 27th March 1960 at Hampstead Synagogue and began married life in their first home on the Golders Green Estate, where they raised their three children.
Maurice studied Modern Languages and Modern Hebrew at Oxford University and had a lifelong love of music, singing solos in choirs and playing both the accordion and piano. His career included roles at the BBC and the BBC Monitoring Service in Caversham, where material was supplied for newspapers printed daily on board ships. Later, after making contact with the Jewish Observer while serving in the Middle East, he became deputy editor and then editor for seven and a half years. He later joined the Financial Times, where he worked on the foreign desk, specialising in UK industries, particularly coal, and remained there for 25 years until retirement. He also gave his time as a volunteer at the Imperial War Museum’s permanent exhibition on the Nazi Holocaust.
Shirley also built an impressive career dedicated to helping others. After raising their children, she worked as a social worker at Brent Council and Hertfordshire Social Services, based at Watford General Hospital, before becoming a senior social worker and trouble-shooter at the Royal London Hospital and in Hackney. She also qualified in Swedish massage, offering this at the Royal Free Hospital, and served as a bereavement counsellor at the synagogue.
In retirement, Shirley developed a passion for sewing and quilting, becoming an expert seamstress and a member of the Quilting Society.
Wayne Hughes, General Manager at Magnolia Court Care Home said: “Maurice and Shirley are a wonderful couple and it has been a privilege to celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary with them. Their story is full of devotion, resilience and shared achievement, and it is clear to everyone here just how much they still love one another. They are a real inspiration to us all.”
Everyone at Magnolia Court feels honoured to have Maurice and Shirley as part of the home and to share in such a remarkable love story.
