The Stage in Shoreditch recently hosted the launch of The Childhood Trust’s new furniture poverty research and the unveiling of a new mural on 26 February, through the charity’s partnership with Cain, the global investment manager.
Held at The Stage’s 32nd Floor Sky Lounge, the event brought together partners and supporters to spotlight the growing issue of furniture poverty. The evening also marked the official launch of a new mural, by The Childhood Trust, on Shoreditch’s Great Eastern Art Wall, located directly outside The Stage on Great Eastern Street.
The mural will be installed from 2nd March and displayed for four weeks focuses on the charity’s community outreach programme Transforming Spaces and the impact transformed spaces can have on children’s lives.
The Childhood Trust is a London based child poverty charity, committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged children by funding local projects that address emotional and practical needs, delivering transformations to environments where children and families live and grow, from bedrooms to community spaces and leading key research into child poverty in London.
The Childhood Trust’s research into furniture poverty highlights how furniture provision and home transformations affect children’s wellbeing and opportunity and identifies systemic barriers that need policy attention. Key findings showed that furniture poverty has immediate and harmful effects on children’s wellbeing, including sleep deprivation, emotional distress, reduced concentration at school and a lack of safe, personal space. Along with home and bedroom transformation projects delivering immediate and measurable benefits for young children.
Through the partnership, Cain provides annual company donations and staff fundraising to support The Childhood Trust’s London Charity Partner Network, enabling the delivery of food parcels, educational and enrichment programmes, mental health services and housing improvements across London.
Cain colleagues have also volunteered their time through The Childhood Trust’s community outreach programme, Transforming Spaces, helping to create safe and welcoming environments where children can thrive. In the first year of the partnership alone, 31 Cain volunteers rolled up their sleeves to paint and decorate, build furniture and transform four children’s bedrooms across the capital.
Olivia Galvin-Hughes, Head of Corporate Partnerships at The Childhood Trust, commented: “Since partnering with Cain, it has allowed us to work together on transforming four new bedrooms for children to help make a real difference. Community and kindness are at the heart of our charity as we truly believe every child deserves a roof over their head, is protected and cared for, and having Cain on board to champion our missions provides more support for volunteering work and funding opportunities to advocate for the children of London.”
Georgia Perry-Hilsdon, Vice President at Cain, commented: “It has been fantastic to help make a difference to so many young children across the capital. From hosting the launch of The Childhood Trust research to unveiling the mural in Shoreditch, it demonstrates why exposure is so important to help create a safe space for the next generation to grow. Our partnership with the charity will continue in the years ahead to drive meaningful change to countless lives.”
